Michael was excellent throughout the year. My son was struggling with A-level Economics and went on to get an A. We have already booked Michael in for our daughter. Mohammed, Parent of A-level Economics student, 2024
A-level Economics
A-level Economics tuition with an Examiner
Three in four of my final-year A-level Economics students achieve A* or A. Tutored across AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, and Cambridge International.
A-level Economics is one of the most rewarding subjects to teach, and one of the most demanding to examine well. The syllabus is broad: microeconomic theory, market failure, macroeconomic policy, the global economy, and (for Edexcel) a synoptic Theme 4 paper that integrates the lot.
The right tutoring is rarely about more content. It is almost always about teaching students how to think and write the way the mark scheme rewards: precise diagrams, weighted evaluation, applied analysis, and command of definitions.
I tutor in person across south west London, central London and Surrey, and online anywhere in the UK and overseas. Most A-level Economics students work with me weekly through the year, with extra sessions or workshops in the run-up to mocks and final exams.
Course structure
What A-level Economics covers
Microeconomics
Demand, supply, elasticity, market structures, market failure, government intervention, labour markets, and the distribution of income and wealth. The foundation for everything else.
Macroeconomics
National income, aggregate demand and supply, fiscal and monetary policy, supply-side policy, inflation, unemployment and economic growth.
The global economy
Trade, exchange rates, balance of payments, globalisation, development economics. Where micro and macro meet.
Synoptic application (Edexcel)
Theme 4 in Edexcel pulls everything together with applied case-study questions. The paper that tends to separate Bs from As.

The mark schemes are different and so is the teaching.
What students struggle with
The differences that move grades
From description to evaluation
Most students arrive writing strong descriptive paragraphs. The jump to A is in evaluation: weighted, contextual, and prioritised. Taught with real mark schemes.
Diagrams that earn full marks
Standard A-level diagrams (PPF, AD/AS, market failure, externalities, monopoly, oligopoly) drilled until they are accurate, fast and properly labelled.
Synoptic thinking
Linking micro principles to macro consequences, and vice versa. Edexcel Theme 4 in particular catches students out.

FAQ
Common questions
-
How long is a typical session?
Online sessions are 30, 60 or 90 minutes. Home visits are 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Most A-level students find 60 minutes a week plus extra around mocks and exams works well.
-
Where does tutoring take place?
Either at the student's home for in-person sessions across south west London, central London and Surrey, or online via video call for students anywhere in the UK and overseas.
-
What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours' notice to reschedule a session without charge. Less than 24 hours' notice is charged at the full session rate. I am flexible around illness and emergencies.
-
Do I need to commit to weekly sessions?
No. Many students book weekly through the year. Others book intensive blocks before mocks or final exams. I tailor frequency to the student's timeline and goals.
-
What areas do you cover for home visits?
South west London, central London and parts of Surrey. The areas covered page lists every town in detail. For students further afield, I tutor online.
-
Is online tutoring as effective as in-person?
Yes, for the right student. Most A-level Economics students do as well or better online because we can use shared whiteboards for diagrams and the recordings are easy to revisit. Younger students sometimes do better in person.
